Situated just 12 kilometres south-west of Dunedin you will find Mosgiel. Divided from Dunedin city by rough hills, which form part of the crater wall of a long-extinct volcano and just off the southern motorway, via Saddle Hill. Mosgiel is a haven for those seeking the quietness of the country life with a rural aspect while still being close to the city of Dunedin for work and pleasure.
Outdoor activities and attractions abound in and around Mosgiel which include the internationally acclaimed Taieri Gorge Railway train trip (looked upon as one of the world's finest rail journeys). We also have the rail trail between Middlemarch and Clyde witch you can ride over 1 to 4 days. TheTaieri river runs through the north end of the town (where you can take pleasure in jet-boating & fly-fishing and provides great open-water swimming in the summer heat). Also there is a choice of golf courses within five minutes drive from the centre of Mosgiel which caters for all golfing types, whether it be professional, or beginner.
Mosgiel is the neighbouring township to the Dunedin International Airport and is often the choice of travellers when disembarking from an international flight. Mosgiel is recognised around the world as the home of Invermay, one of the country's largest agricultural research institutes.
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony offer unique opportunity to observe Blue Penguins' natural behaviour in their natural environment. Unobtrusive lighting is used to enhance the viewing area as the penguins arrive after dusk. Visitors are led by a guide who delivers a light educational commentary.
In Dunedin, a NZ town with a district Scottish flavour, you can visit the famous Speights Brewery located in the city centre, go mountain-biking, walking and camping. Within the city boundaries are numerous noteworthy gardens, from the formally laid out annual colour displays of the Dunedin Railway Station gardens, to the delightful private gardens owned by local residents. Glenfalloch Woodland Garden and Restaurant is a 30 acre harbour side garden featuring rhododendrons, fuchsias, azaleas and magnolias. A famous feature at the Botanic Garden is the Rhododendron Dell, which is celebrated every year in the third week of October with the Rhododendron Festival.
On the Otago Peninsula close to Dunedin you will find New Zealand's only castle. The magnificent gardens and the road to Larnach Castle - located 15 minutes drive from Dunedin City, make it more than a worthwhile trip.
To sight a soaring Albatross is unforgettable - a spectacle you can experience for yourself at the Royal Albatross Centre. This one hour tour starts at the Centre, nestled at the foot of Taiaroa Head, at one with its environment. Your guide will begin by taking you through the bird's fascinating story. From the Centre, it's a short walk to the Observatory for the privilege of seeing for yourself the greatest of all seabirds (viewing varies during the year).
The Taieri Gorge Limited train is Dunedin's prestige tourist train operating from the historic Railway and takes passengers on a journey through the rugged scenery within Taieri River Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels. A full commentary is given and refreshments are available on board.
